New PlayLab

Modeled on the Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab, our New Play Development Lab pairs playwrights with a director, dramaturg or designer to develop the play over the course of six months. The entire lab will meet on a twice-monthly basis, and each writer will have the opportunity to present his or work to the group 4 times. The lab culminates in staged readings of the new full-length plays written in the lab. The lab is playwright-centered allowing flexibility for the needs of each individual writer. There are many local and national development opportunities for writers who have a play that is mostly written and in the late stages of development (such as the Bay Area Playwright’s Festival or the O’Neill Theater Conference). There are also opportunities (such as Playground) for writers to write a piece in a short period of time. There are, however, few long-term play development programs that seek to provide a platform to develop a new play from conception to first draft outside of graduate programs and we believe this program will provide an excellent way to fill that void.
